Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

TRT is based on a model of understanding of tinnitus that emphasizes the important connections between the cochlea, a little organ in the ear that processes sound, and the parts of the brain that control emotion and basic body functions, as well as our response to stress. The TRT approach also claims that these connections involve both the conscious and subconscious parts of the brain, and can be modified and potentially extinguished through a focused effort.

TRT combines counselling and exposure to low-level broad-band noise to achieve what is known as auditory habituation. TRT uses in-the-ear sound generators that provide a low level of neutral sound. The sound generators even only operated at a low enough level such that the tinnitus is still detectable, but less intrusive. TRT also helps reduce the negative emotional reaction to tinnitus symptoms, and retrains the brain to become accustomed to the

sound so that it may become less bothersome.

What type of study was this?

These authors reviewed the entire world’s scientific literature looking for high-quality studies that either support or disprove the benefits of TRT. Called a systematic review, this kind of research seeks to combine information from multiple studies so as to yield a better understanding of whether treatments work.

What were the findings?

Despite the growing and widespread popularity of TRT, the authors could find only one study that reviewed the benefits of this approach in a sound, scientific manner. Even at that, the authors noted that this study did not adhere to all of the steps that might reduce the chances of a biased result. Nevertheless, this one study of 123 participants suggested some remarkable benefits, particularly in those who were suffering the most.

What should tinnitus sufferers do?

Treating tinnitus remains a really tough nut to crack. Individualized approaches most of the tiomes are the way to go as some treatments may be better suited and thus more effective than others for certain individuals. A trial-and-error approach is therefore very reasonable, and while more research evidence is required for TRT to receive full endorsement, it does seem to be worth a try for those still seeking relief.

By right, TRT should be offered only by professionals who have received specific training in this approach. However, ready access to these services may not be available to all sufferers and a series of self-help books has been published that can guide the patient through treatment.

The material provided in HealthWatch is designed for general educational purposes only and does not pertain to individual cases. It should not replace necessary medical consultations with your own doctor or medical professional.
