Mother’s Day: Gift Traditions

The origins of Mother’s Day date back to the Middle Ages, when children in training as spprentices would go home to visit their family. The reunion of mother and child was rare, with children as young as ten seeing their mothers only twice a year. This early separation led to the creation of “Mothering Sunday,” a term that referred to the Sunday before Lent. Popular Mother’s Day gifts have changed over the years, with todays choices including Mother’s , flowers, and candy.

Early Mother’s Day Gifts

In the Middle Ages, it was common for children to bring their mothers presents that were small but thoughtful. Bunches of flowers and small gifts from the region they were apprenticed to were common gifts. Since children who were apprentices rarely earned money, these gifts were typically inexpensive. Gifts of food, such as cake, were very common, as well. These early traditions led to the inception of Mother’s Day, which was made an official holiday in 1914.

The Mother’s Day that we celebrate today is very different from this older tradition. Initially, Mother’s Day was a day of thanks for all the love and work mothers do, and although gifts were not uncommon they were small and inexpensive. Mother’s Day is celebrated by families around the world today, with common gifts being personalized jewelry, such as mother’s rings and necklaces.

Modern Gifts for Mom

Some of the modern gifts for Mother’s Day are very creative, and can be nearly anything that you think you mom will appreciate. From flowers to dinner to , there are many different options available. Personalized can be made to indicate any names, dates or symbols that are important to you and your mom, including birth dates, Chinese symbols, or even the names of your mom’s children. Mother’s jewelry is an excellent choice if you and your sibling want to give mom something special.

Mother’s that indicates the birthstones of her children is also very popular. Whether you choose a mother’s birthstone ring that has a stone for each child or a personalized necklace for mom, the choices are endless. The can be created in sterling silver, gold, or platinum, depending upon your budget. There are also other gifts that are meaningful and appreciated, such as dinner out (especially thoughtful if your mom cooks a lot!), or anything you know your mother will use and love.

Mom’s Deserve Gifts That Are Special

A gift for Mom!  What an exciting and fun present to buy, because you really want this woman to know what she means to you!  You can be frustrated, though, if the lady you’re buying for is picky about size, color, style, scent, and so forth.  Just remember, though, that the gift you choose reflects how you see her.  In other words, if you buy her an ironing board, she’ll think you see her as a maid!  Since your goal is to honor your wife, mother, grandmother—or even an aunt or sister—choose from this extensive assortment of ideas in wide-ranging prices, guaranteed to please!

1.    Mother’s Personalized jewelry represents a time-honored tradition for making your mother or wife feel very special. There is a wide variety of jewlery pieces to choose from - necklaces, bracelets, rings, charms, broaches.Often combining the resources of siblings can create an even more impressive gift that represents all of your effors.  Mother’s jewelry is an ultimate celebration of a woman’s motherhood, no matter what else she does in life.  Grandmother’s serves this same important purpose!  The price ranges vary depending on whether you buy sterling silver or 18k or 14k or 10k gold, or real versus simulated gemstones.  If you are buying a mother’s ring check with the retailer to see if the size can be adjusted after purchase. This really is one gift idea that allows you to pick and choose details to fit your wallet!

2.    Spa visit – No matter how young or old your mother or wife is, everybody enjoys a spa treatment!  Some women long for a full-body massage or hot stone treatment at a luxurious day spa.  Other women are a little squeamish about having someone else’s hands on their bodies, and if your mother is like that she’ll enjoy a manicure and maybe a pedicure. This is another gift that can be adjusted to your budget.  You just buy a spa certificate for the amount you can afford and let her choose her own services.  Check online for beauty salons and spas in your area, or just look up your local day spa in the yellow pages!

3.    Maid Day – What better way to show her she is definitely not just the maid than purchasing her services from a cleaning lady?  Contact a local cleaning service to buy a day or half day of cleaning.  You can specify that the cleaning service will attack a chore she’s been dreading.  Or you can purchase recurrent general services in your home one day a month, or one-half day a week—whatever fits your budget!  This is another service you can look for online, but again make certain the vendor services your local area.

4.    Gift of Time – This is perfect, especially for kids, because it is a gift of consideration and love. And the best part is it’s inexpensive. You can find many great certifcate programs online.  All you need to do is specify what service you promise to give, fill in who it’s for and who it’s from, and then print your certificate.  If you have money to spend, you can print the certificate to represent something that’s prepaid, such as babysitting services.  If you don’t have money, just be certain you’re prepared to fulfill the terms you have promised!

5.    Movie tickets – Everyone likes to go to the movies!  Some people only go once or twice a year, and some would go every week if they could. Most theater chains offer a number of gift certificate options to fit your budget.  If you want to spend a little more than the cost of movie tickets, pick up a gift certificate for her favorite restaurant.Let her know that it’s up to her whether she goes on her own, chooses a friend or … you!

Remember that whoever this woman is in your life, whether she is the mother of your children, or if she is your mother or grandmother, she has put a lot of energy into making your life special and easier.  This is your opportunity to show her what she means to you.  Whether you buy her mother’s or a give her a promise to help out with a dreaded task, she will appreciate your thoughtfulness. When you give her your present, don’t forget to say or write the words, “I love you.”
