Work was becoming too hectic for a young police officer named Gary. Although he had only been on the police force for four years, he was already known as a hard worker who almost never refused working overtime. In truth, he was now working twenty to twenty-five hours of overtime each week and, consequently, he felt like he was losing his handle on his personal life. What complicated the situation was the fact that Gary started going out drinking with a group of fellow officers after his shift.
What Began as Fun Soon Became Unhealthy and Abusive Drinking
What began as fun very soon turned into unhealthy and abusive drinking and then into a viscous cycle of feeling tired each morning when he got up for his shift, working more long hours, and then going drinking with his friends after work.
Clearly Gary was in a psychological and health-related rut and going through some adverse alcohol effects on the body. Where Gary really observed drinking related issues and alcohol short term effects, however, was in his family life and in his marriage. His wife wasn’t really a nag, but she typically asked him to stay at home more with her and with the children instead of going out and blowing all of his money while drinking with his pals.
Gary’s Careless and Abusive Drinking Negatively Affects His Personality
In a similar way, Gary’s irresponsible and abusive drinking also adversely affected his personality. Stated briefly, the more he drank, the less patience he had with any problems or issues that came up regarding his children or his wife.
It Was Clear to Gary That His Careless and Hazardous Drinking Was Negatively Affecting His Health, Pocketbook, Relationship With His Family, and His Work
In his heart of hearts, it was obvious to Gary that his excessive and careless drinking was negatively affecting his relationship with his family, work, pocketbook, and his health. So one Tuesday afternoon Gary decided to talk to Jerry, a trusted old police officer buddy that he greatly admired.
Gary mentioned to Jerry how hazardous and excessive drinking was adversely affecting his relationship with his family, health, pocketbook, and his work. Jerry mentioned to Gary that he really understood because roughly nine years ago, he too involved himself with abusive drinking. If truth be known, Jerry told Gary that hazardous and careless drinking can create so many issues in a person’s life that almost everything of importance can be destroyed. And finally, Jerry recommended that Gary make an appointment with an alcohol counselor at the work-affiliated alcohol and drug abuse rehabilitation facility.
Since his employee’s assistance program was affiliated with this rehab center, it was not only quite affordable but also very convenient to get some quality counseling about his excessive and abusive drinking. And since the staff at the substance abuse rehabilitation facility was competent, supportive, and non-judgmental, Gary would be able to get alcohol rehab that made sense to him and something he could accomplish.
After talking to his counselor about how his drinking was ruining his work, health, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook, Gary grasped the fact that he was burning the candle at both ends with his hectic work hours and his unhealthy and excessive drinking. Once he understood that he was getting himself into a rut, with the assistance of his psychiatrist, and after twenty weeks in rehab, he was at last able to stop drinking and quit working overtime.
Due to His Alcohol Rehab Gary Felt More Healthy and Had Much More Energy
The result was that Gary viewed life differently now that he was in alcohol recovery. More to the point, due to his alcohol treatment he not only noticed that he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, but he was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, he felt better and more healthy, and he had more quality time to spend with his family. Ironically, now that he stopped drinking, Gary and his wife were not only beginning to save some money for a different house but he also felt more energized and alert than anytime since he and his wife were married.

One of the alcohol abuse facts that somehow escapes a lot of individual’s awareness is that irresponsible and unhealthy drinking commonly negatively affects relationships. Stated differently, to a relatively great extent, irresponsible and careless drinking is to relationships what substance abuse is to an individual’s health or what dysfunctional brakes are to the safety of the driver of a vehicle. In all of these instances, the outcome is usually a calamity.
When the correlation between irresponsible and careless drinking and relationships is investigated a little more attentively, nevertheless, you can find some convincing reasons why abusive and excessive drinking and relationships don’t go together in a healthy or beneficial fashion.
Abusive and Irresponsible Drinking Decreases a Person’s Inhibitions
First, careless and abusive drinking lowers an individual’s inhibitions. This frequently means that somebody who has been drinking has less control over what he or she says and does. The bottom line is that people in a relationship who have been drinking are a lot more likely to engage in cruel and heated interchanges and/or hostility that may not have taken place if neither person was drinking.
Excessive Drinking Adversely Affects a Person’s Problem Solving, Decision-Making, and Reasoning Skills and Abilities
Second, abusive and careless drinking negatively influences a person’s decision-making, reasoning, and problem solving abilities. Indeed, if an individual uses faulty decision-making, reasoning, and problem solving skills and abilities, this generally adversely impacts the options somebody makes as well as his or her behavior. Such a condition, it’s articulated, is an accident waiting to happen when relationships are concerned due to the number of decisions and issues that need to be focused upon on a recurring basis.
Hazardous Drinking Normally Impacts the Drinker’s Finances in an Extremely Negative Manner
Third, careless drinking commonly impacts the drinker’s finances in a harmful manner. In the end, whether somebody buys his or her alcohol at a nightclub, restaurant, sports event, liquor store, or drinks at home, hazardous and abusive drinking is not cheap. And if cash is spent on drinking rather than on the mortgage, utilities, food, credit card bills, car or truck payments, the rent, and so on, underlying troubles in a relationship are more likely than not right around the corner.
Hazardous and Excessive Drinking Usually Manifests Itself at an Individual’s Place of Employment
Fourth, irresponsible drinking frequently manifests itself at the workplace. To the degree that this takes place, a person’s ability to make a living is critically placed in a hazardous situation and this, in turn, adversely affects a person’s relationships.
Irresponsible and Abusive Drinking Commonly Leads to Problems With the Law
Finally, excessive and irresponsible drinking commonly results in complications with the law. Evidently one or more ”drunk driving” arrests, as an illustration, cannot do anything but harm a relationship from an emotional and from a financial orientation.
You Need Motivation to Get Alcohol Treatment to Stop Your Irresponsible and Abusive Drinking
So what is the message to be taken away from this discussion? First, if you want to have solid, beloved relationships in your life, abstain from excessive and irresponsible drinking. Second, if you are a drinker and you are in a relationship, if you want to keep this relationship or maybe make it more solid, then make sure you always drink responsibly or not at all. And third, if you have alcohol problems that are adversely affecting your relationship, please seek more alcohol information and consider getting alcohol counseling.
Conclusion
in sum, it can be seen that abusive and unhealthy drinking negatively influences an individual’s relationships mainly because it lowers a person’s inhibitions and results in unkind and malicious arguments and/or physical abuse.
It can also be determined that irresponsible and excessive drinking negatively impacts an individual’s reasoning, decision-making, and problem solving skills and abilities, as a consequence leading to inappropriate choices and actions.
In a related way, unhealthy and excessive drinking generally adversely influences the drinker’s finances, thus affecting the money management ability of the individuals who are actively involved in the relationship. In addiction, irresponsible and hazardous drinking usually disrupts a relationship because of alcohol-related employment difficulties.
And finally, hazardous drinking frequently results in alcohol related complications with the law such as DUIs, jail time, and fines and penalties. Apparently, such legal predicaments negatively affect most loving relationships.
