Freckle Removal With Laser Treatment

Freckles can be prevented by avoiding the sun or wearing a strong sunscreen. These are the only methods that can stop the formation or worsening of already present freckles. However, there are a few freckle removal options available for individuals who wish to get rid of their speckled complexions. One of these includes treatment with a laser.

All discolorations of the skin should be examined by a dermatologist before removal. Especially if they happen to be located in usual spots or if they are oddly shaped. In these cases, it is possible that they may be pre-cancerous or cancerous. If cancer is present, all affected cells must be removed. Problems will be much harder to identify and then treat if the spots are partially eliminated.

If spots turn out to be only harmless freckles, they can safely be removed. One way to accomplish this is with a laser. Laser treatments are highly successful. The pigment in freckles, called melanin, easily absorbs light with wave lengths longer than ultraviolet light. This is why all colored lights will be successfully absorbed, as all are longer than ultraviolet rays.

The most effective color for use is green, which has the shortest wavelength that is still longer than ultraviolet waves. Additional colors include purple, yellow, orange, red and blue lights, all with longer wave lengths. The longest still is infrared, which is also invisible. Infrared is not ideal because of this, and green light is a much more favorable option.

Laser treatment is pain free and results in only minor discomfort. Numbing agents applied topically are usually not needed before laser use. Some possible results of procedures include crusting on top of the skin or light bruising. Both of these last at most two weeks.

Before considering removing freckles, consult a dermatologist to make sure that skin is cancer free. If the freckles are proven to be harmless, laser treatment with a green light is most effective. Anesthesia is not needed, and any side effects disappear after two weeks.
