Four Ways To Pick Out Non-Authentic Ray-Ban Wayfarer Sunglasses
The Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses have been about since the 50’s. To call them popular is an understatement. Flip the pages of an entertainment mag and chances are there will be at least one photo of a star with a pair of Wayfarer style sunglasses on.
But being a classic eye-wear model which is arguably the best-selling sun-glass model ever, has one serious downside - the presence of numerous fakes.
Fake Ray Ban Wayfarer models are everywhere, on the internet as well as at your friendly neighborhood mall. Fakes are getting harder and harder to recognise as many come quite close aesthetically to the originals. But using fakes may lead to problems with your dear eyes in the long run because fake Wayfarer style sunglasses lack the original’s technology.
Fortuitously there remain a few ways you can spot a fake.
The Price
This will appear a bit too plain but you aren’t going to discover a brand spanking new pair of real Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses for $30 anywhere. Even the Junior Wayfarer models costs more than this. Nonetheless simply because a pair of Ray Bans cost more than $100, does not mean it is real. It could be just some sneaky seller trying to improve his margins by hiking up the price to trick trusting purchasers.
New Owners
Not many realize this but Bausch & Lomb sold the Ray Ban brand to Milan based Luxottica in 1999. So models made after that date should have the text “100% UV Protection - Ray Ban - Shades By Luxottica” printed on the seal on the case. Any model post 1999 that has “Made in USA”, “BL” or “Bausch & Lomb” imprinted on it’s a sure fake.
Some fakes get all of the perceivable prints correct but still have the initials BL etched on the lens. Most likely because they didn’t need to waste the lenses. Originals will have the initials “RB” engraved on the corner of the left lens.
Inconsistent Model Number
Wayfarers come in several models and each model has a model code. For instance, RB2140 and RB2132, which represent the first Wayfarer model and the new Wayfarer model respectively. Infrequently, the fake sun shades don’t display the correct model number on the inside of the churches. So be certain to check this out when you buy a pair of Wayfarers.
Logo On The Outside Temple
Fake Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses also have the Ray Ban logo on the outside of the churches like the originals. But on better investigation, you will notice that the fakes have the logos fastened on while the logo on original Ray-Ban original Wayfarer sunglasses are basically part of the temple.
In summary,
- Just because the price of a pair of Wayfarers is high does not necessarily mean it is authentic
- Buy your Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses from a reputable source
- A dead giveaway that a pair Wayfarer sunglasses is fake is the ridiculously low price
