Men - Retro Fashion That Is Still Cool Today

Every decade has had its fair share of faux pas but its fair to say that some pieces from the past will endure forever more as style classics. Looking at photos from bygone decades can be a great way to get ideas for retro that will still look cool today and help you to work out the trends that are best left in the past! Some retro pieces sell for a lot of money in vintage shops and internet auction sites but it’s still possible to get cool retro-looking items as many fashions from the past come back in style in a modernized form for the present times.

The black leather jacket and blue jeans are two classic items from the 1950s that still endure to this day. The look was made popular by singer Elvis Presley and actors Marlon Brando in his film The Wild One and James Dean. When teamed with a plain white t-shirt and boots this retro look still looks cool today and it is an easy look to recreate. In the past retro Levis 501s regularly sold in vintage shops but this ‘bad boy’ look doesn’t rely solely on items from the 50s so no need to scour the vintage shops unless you want something authentic from that era.

At the beginning of the 1960s for men became more fitted and slim fitting suits still look good today. This look was adopted by the Mods and it meant that suiting became more casual with single-breasted jackets, slim ties and shirts with narrower collars in . The Beatnik look also became popular and this is a look that still endures today with blackturtle neck jumpers worn under blazers being a defining look for The Beat Generation. The later part of the 1960s saw the birth of the hippie with ponchos, velvet trousers and bell bottoms being worn by The Beatles, as seen in the Sgt Pepper era. This is perhaps one of the looks that is best left for fancy dress parties!

The 70s is often described as the decade best left forgotten by and to be honest it is hard to find items from this decade that have endured as well as those from other decades. In the 1980s the simple jeans and white t-shirt look from the fifties made a comeback helped by designer Calvin Klein. And 501 jeans once again becoming popular fuelled by an ultra cool advertising campaign. Trainers or sneakers were really popular in the 1980s with the emergence of the Hip Hop music scene and many of these styles have either been reproduced for modern times or are much coveted as original vintage items of footwear.

Sportswear and particularly trainers continued to be popular in the early 1990s influenced by both the Hip Hop music scene and the dance/clubbing scene. Trainers from this era will still fetch good money when sold as vintage with the Nike brand being particularly popular at this time. The grunge music scene also influenced and the flannel, plaid shirts, ripped jeans and big boots from this time still endure as a cool look for the aspiring rockers of today.
