The Grudge Between The Cornhuskers And The Huskies Carries On

When the were defeated last Sunday, they were disqualified from competing in the Big Bowl Championships. Their rating in the Big 12 went down to 5. As an alternative, the were anticipating being invited to play opposite Iowa in the Insight Bowl games. But the Insight management had other ideas. They selected Missouri instead. Finally, the were asked to compete in the Holiday Bowl Games. These bowl games have a fatter reward than the Insight Bowl games.

The Holiday Bowl game is a rematch against the Washington Huskies. The had to defeat Washington State last Saturday to get into the bowl. Washington University won over UCLA, California and Washington State to qualify. The has played the Holiday bowl for two times in the past. During the last game, they defeated Arizona 33-0.

For their part, the Washington Huskies have also played the Holiday bowl three times, the last game being in 2007. This forthcoming game comes as a sequel to the continuing grudge match between the two teams. In the last three grudge games out of eight, including the one played last September, 2010, Washington consistently lost, bringing the score to 4-3-1 favoring the . Even before this coming match has even been played, plans are already in place for another encounter between the two teams for next season.

It is a requirement imposed on the Holiday bowl that they get teams, one from the PAC-10 and another from the Big 12. These teams should have played a total of 6 games in all. Among the other bowl games, the Holiday Bowl is next in line to the Insight Bowl games for choosing the teams it wants to invite. Apparently, this year, The Holiday Bowl ran out of options and had to settle for and Washington.

It is not often that bowl games invite the same teams for two straight years. When that happens, it can only mean that those two were the only ones eligible under normal circumstances. If the or the Huskies had failed to qualify, the bowl games management would have had to select from among the other teams that are in the highest 14 positions in the ratings and which have already won a total of 9 games in all. These substitute teams are called at-large teams.

It seems the and the Huskies are anticipating this repeat playoff between the two grudging teams. The coaches are certainly anticipating the event. the excitement is heightened by the fact that both teams have to come up with new moves and new playing techniques to surprise the opponent who, by this time, has become familiar its routine. That is partly causing the eager anticipation of both fans, spectators and the team management itself for the Holiday bowl games this year.
