As you may already know surfing originated from the small Pacific islands and now has a global presence. When the sport came in to existence there of course were non of the big surfing brands like Roxy Clothing as well as Animal Clothing. It was not in people’s vision that the sport would ever grow to conquer the world. Because of advance in the type of equipment being used in the sport today people can now spend much longer in the water and have more control over their board thanks to innovative brands such as Quiksilver.

The ring of fire is in effect a large circle in the Pacific Ocean where the tectonic plates meet and small volcanic islands, such as Hawaii, are formed. But what many people don’t realise is that these tropical paradises are not exactly good for us. The climate is hot and humid whilst the islands are naturally surrounded by salt water which can dry your skin out.

This is why the wetsuit was invented because surfers were becoming frustrated by not being able to spend long in the water when temperatures drop. The suit works by keeping a thin layer of water trapped close to your skin thus being heated by your natural body heat and in turn keeping you warm. Wetsuits were truly a revelation in the world of surfing, as they allowed people to spend much longer in the water than they previously had. Now that the wetsuit was available all across the world surfing had truly become a global sport that anyone could try.

Coral growing in reef’s close to the shore can be a huge problem for surfers however by wearing a wetsuit and some other select items you would be able to protect yourself against these annoyances. At the same time surf boards were changing as well to provide those interested with much more choice and expand the reach that surfing already had. Short boards came about as skilled surfers wanted to experiment and try new tricks with shorter board providing much more manoeuvrability.
