Back when she was 16 and in high school in Tampa, Fla., Phillips designed sandals with interchangeable straps for fashionable flair as part of an artwork venture. In just a couple years, Switchflops was in flight as a legitimate fashion retail company. The Switchflops revenue projection for 2010 is a healthy $ 30 million.
The concept behind Switchflops is quite simple
Switchflops are a more budget-savvy way for consumers to expand their casual fashion shoe possibilities. Thanks to a wide array of strips, Phillips’ Switchflops give people the choices they’ve been craving. From buttons to bangles and beads, it is all there. The price is right, too: $ 35 for the sole with one strap, and $ 12 apiece for additional decorative straps. Each new strap makes for a fashionable, affordable new adventure. Now the adventure continues for Switchflops the business, as they sell other shoe types for adults and kids, also as fashion accessories like bags and scarves. Phillips’ fashion inventions are sold in more than 4,000 stores worldwide.
‘Everyone wore flip-flops to school, all of the time’
Phillips saw the need and filled it, displaying a classic entrepreneurial sense. The children at her high school loved to wear flip-flops to school (”Everyone wore them all the time,” she told AOL), however the casual shoes weren’t always probably the most fashionable shoe in and of themselves.
