Some straight talk about - How to Buy Black Onyx Necklaces and other Black Onyx Jewelry.

Dear Reader when looking to purchase  high  quality Black Onyx Necklaces or any  black onyx jewelry for that matter, you look  for high quality  features in the Luster, Flaws, Color, Size ,Cut.

When you check out the luster in black onyx the best is the high gloss shiny finish. The high gloss luster gives off  the rich deep mysterious blackness of the onyx, just about like a magical beast coming to life. It may be common sense to look for the more desirable,  shiny, rich finish for some people, and others may not see the difference between the high gloss and a “dead” dull less desirable finish.

As you are searching for any flaws in the black onyx stone. Any type of flaw  could maybe mean a weak area in the stone which plainly is not what we want If that spot  is hit  just the certain way it could further damage or chip the stone. Or worse yet, even worse rather than one complete stone you could possibly end up with  two or more pieces in the setting and even lose the whole gem  itself.

There are three most common flaws in all natural stones are cracks, chips, and bubbles. Which are  pretty much self explanatory, cracks are just that - cracks in the stone, (and we are not talking about “carpenter” cracks, that’s something totally different) chips are little pieces of the onyx missing from the main piece, and bubbles. Well, bubbles are much more difficult to see but not  impossible. There are times you can see the bubbles with the naked eye and sometimes you have to use a jewelers loop. Which is a little 10X power magnifying glass that professional  jewelers and sales managers keep close by and sometimes it is hung  around the  neck on a yarn or cord. Of course when you buy natural onyx you want the least amount of bubbles in your onyx jewelry as possible.

Don’t be afraid or intimidated to inspect the jewelry when buying it from a local jewelry retailer, a pawn shop, at the flea market, a private proprietor, or even online. All honorable and legal businesses have a return or exchange policy period of at least 20 or sometimes  30 days.

once in a while a producer will  try to hide a flaw or several flaws under the prongs of the jewelry. The prong is a gold tip soldered to the setting and overlaps the stone holding it securely in place. Allot of times the gold setting is hollow in the back, so you can also look on the back side to see the stone, and find if there are any flaws or damage from that angle.

You should never buy  any jewelry that is already damaged. The glorious Black Onyx stones cannot be fixed.

Damage to black onyx necklaces are rare. The damage to an onyx stone is more likely to happen in a ring or bracelet, where it gets more movement around  hard surfaces and  corners, although a pendant could also get  damaged under proper conditions.

Black Onyx has a range of many shades, the deep, dark rich black color  being more desirable.

Size of the stone is a direct reflection of the cost. Of course the larger the stone the more it will cost.

The cut of the stone also has a reflection of the cost. A few of the types of cuts are round, emerald, checker board, and marque as well as many other design types.

So when looking to buy a black onyx necklace or any other black onyx jewelry, you look for Luster, Flaws, Color, Size and Cut. And the magical mystery of the black onyx will soon begin to happen.
