Bicycle Riding: How To Minimize The Risk Of Getting Injured
Cyclists, no matter how careful they get, still is susceptible to getting injured while riding. Accidents may happen, especially when driving on a busy road or perilous terrain. It’s vital that one’s safety is maintained at all costs. And this is when having the right protective gears and knowing road rules step into the picture.
While protective gears will not keep an injury from ever happening, they can reduce its severity should you fall off your bike. It’s not enough that you wear clothes suitable for the cycling activity, such as a pair of Pearl Izumi shorts and a top. While they provide you with some level of protection already, they should be supplemented by other protective gears.
If there’s one part of your body that you need to protect the most, obviously it’s your head. And that’s why donning a helmet is very important. Wearing one will cut down head injuries by sixty percent should a crash occur. Wearing any helmet isn’t enough. Buy something exclusive for bike riding, and it should also have a sticker that says it passed rigorous test and standards.
There are other essential gears such as shatter proof goggles and gloves. If you’re a beginner or if you’re going in the direction of extreme sports, you should have additional ones. Some of them include shin guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and the likes. Shoes specifically for cycling are also available, for comfort and extra safety.
Sometimes, the Schwinn mountain bike, BMX or other bicycle models you buy don’t come accessorized completely. When riding your vehicle at night, it’s important to have both head and rear lights installed. The same is true with reflectors to make sure other motorists can spot you. Mirrors and horns are great additions as well.
It’s also important for you to know and practice some road cycling rules. For example, going in a straight line makes your course predictable to others. Or you should use your hands to signal when stopping or turning. Think that you’re driving a car, thus you should behave that way and be a defensive driver. Be smart at all times, such as making decisions not to take a busy road.
If you’re planning on becoming a competitive cyclist, it’s important to seek the help of a personal trainer. You will be well-guided as you build up your skill. However, it’s not always that he or she will be beside you each time you practice riding your bike. Minimize your risk of getting injured by having the right protective wear and practicing defensive driving.
