Stop Smoking - A Guide To Nicotine Chewing Gum
Smokers are not addicted to cigarettes as such, but rather the nicotine that goes into them. Commonly, nicotine withdrawal can cause headaches, irritability, difficulty concentrating and possible depression. This problem was addressed in the early 80s, with the introduction of nicotine gum. More smokers have successfully quit smoking using it than any other quit smoking aid. Nicotine-laced gum can these days be bought in most chemists and pharmacies. Doctors say that smokers should use it for 3 months in order to end their addiction. Those who still feel the need to smoke after that period of time are advised to speak with their doctor. Unfortunately, some smokers find themselves becoming addicted to the nicotine gum. In a sense, people kick one habit and trade it for another. So, is being addicted to nicotine gum a bad thing? Being addicted to nicotine gum is no better or worse than being addicted to caffeine. It is not ideal, but there are much worse things to be addicted to. Remember that is not actually the nicotine in cigarettes that causes all of the health problems associated with smoking. It is the thousands of chemicals that cigarette manufacturers add to their products which are the problem, none of which are found in nicotine gum. Smoking a cigarette gives you a quick surge of nicotine, whereas the gum delivers the nicotine slowly through the mucous membranes of your mouth, plus the levels of nicotine are lower. Do not be fooled into thinking that nicotine gum is an easy solution to your cigarette habit though, as it is not. The longer you use the gum, the more addicted to it you will be, and more similar the withdrawal symptoms will be to those faced when quitting smoking.
