You can find walleyes in very small natural walleye lakes less than 50 acres or large areas or entire lakes, such as the western basin of lake Erie which incidentally covers over 1265 square miles. They are found in lakes of pea-soup clarity to ultra-clear lakes of the Canadian shield.Amazingly, walleyes are comfortable in still or current fed waters.
Natural lakes provide far more walleye habitat than any other type of water. In terms of total acreage, A walleye fishing mecca would be the North American walleye waters. Here’s a breakdown by percentage: 94% Natural walleye lakes, 5% man-made reservoirs, 1% rivers and streams.
As a result of widespread stocking outside their native range,walleyes are now found in 32 % of all the freshwater acreage in North America creating many pristine walleye fishing waters.
Populations are usually highest in large shallow walleye fishing lakes with moderate to low water clarity. For example, a large body of water, such as the western basin is likely to have many windswept shorelines and reefs that are excellent for walleye spawning grounds. And a shallow fishing lake is likely to provide more food then deep water walleye lakes. A lake needs to have shallow feeding shelves in order to have a good population of walleyes, if the shoreline drops sharply into deep water and these shelves are not present the population of walleye will be much smaller. Another good reason walleyes prefer low clarity walleye waters is because of there very light sensitive eyes.
Lets talk a bit about the different classifications of lakes. The first type of lake we will discuss is a Oligotrophic walleye fishing lake, which have fair to good walleye numbers.Oligotrophic lakes are excellent for spawning because there are so many rocky basins,but they tend to be cold and infertile.
The fact that a Oligotrophic lake will have good spawning grounds on rocky basins is key to holding good to fair walleye numbers because as we said before, these lakes tend to be cold and infertile. Walleyes in Oligotrophic deep lakes will live longer but will not grow as big or as fast as in shallower, low clarity warmer fertile lakes. Most Oligotropic lakes are in remote areas, so anglers take fewer walleyes.
The largest number walleyes will be found in Mesotrophic walleye fishing lakes. Mesotrophic lakes produce a adequate food supply and are considered in the medium range as far as fertility Walleyes grow at a fast rate in these lakes. Most of these fishing lakes have enough gravel or rubble bottom for successful spawning. Mesotropical walleye lakes seldom have a winter kill but may lack oxygen at the deeper depths.
A Eutrophic walleye fishing lake will be highly fertile and have abundant food supplies. Walleyes in one of these walleye lakes grow rapidly, but because of allot of silted deposits will offer limited spawning habitat. The natural walleye habitat is normally low and expensive stocking is needed. If a Eutrophic walleye lake is less than 25ft deep, a heavy snow cover for any length of time will cause multiple winter fish kills

Lake Erie and her tributaries are world famous for their walleye fishing, and to kick every walleye season off there is a fishing spectacle that is rarely seen, and it’s called the annual Maumee River walleye run. If you catch the river at it’s best when the walleye are going up river to there spawning grounds full speed you can catch your limit of walleye very quickly. There are some key things you need to know if you want to have a successful fishing trip on the Maumee.
March of every year normally earmarks the start of the annual spawning migration of the walleye from lake erie up her tributaries. The most famous tributary run is the Maumee river. The date thousands of walleye will start there migration up river is determined by good old mother natures The date is determined by when the the water temperature reaches near the 40deg mark.The walleye will head up river to their favorite spawning beds and will stage there until the water warms between 42deg - 52deg Fahrenheit and then the females will spawn.Normally the ave date is late march into early april when this all happens.
