When NOT to Wear Sunglasses
As with virtually anything else in life, there is a time an place for sunglasses. Most would agree that the benefits of protective eyewear are tried and true. Still, there are times and places that your sunglasses are not appropriate. Additionally, there are also times and places that they’re just not going to do you any good.
The etiquette of eyewear is not a topic that is often discussed. We would all like to think that everyone would make the right decision in deciding when to take and when to leave behind the sunglasses. Still, there are obviously those that could use a little help on the subject. For those people, and as a reference for the rest of us, compiled here are just a few of the occasions in which sunglasses should be left in the car.
Wearing sunglasses indoors anywhere is almost always not appropriate. If you have a medical condition causing sensitivitety to artificial lights, you may be excused from this rule. To everyone else that insists on wearing shades indoors, you should know something crucial. The rest of us are watching you, waiting for you to walk into a wall or trip over a chair.
Socially, wearing your sunglasses indoors is often just plain rude. When you are trying to carry on a conversation with a person that is wearing sunglasses for no apparent reason, it can be rather distracting. While you may think that you are putting out the mystery-man vibe, you’re actually just telling people you are not interested in what they have to say. If you plan to make it a habit of giving off this attitude, expect to receive the same in return.
Unless you are Corey Hart and need to “keep track of all the visions” in your eyes, sunglasses at night seem a little silly. For the same reason you should not wear sunglasses indoors, wearing them at night should be avoided as well. Again, you may think you look cool, but just about everyone else will think you’re drunk or trying to cover up a black eye. Whether or not it is socially acceptable, sunglasses at night is just not a good idea.
Consider what a pair of sunglasses is meant to do for you. They are designed to shield your eyes from the violent radiation of the sun and make it more comfortable for you to see. While your efforts of protecting your eyes from the brightness of the street lights, you may be doing more harm than good. Logistically, it can be dangerous to wear dark shades at night, particularly while driving. Why inhibit your vision more than the darkness of the night already does? Find another way to tell people you’re cool.
Some situations are acceptable times to wear sunglasses, but still carry rules to be considered. For example, you have been invited to a friend’s house for a mid day barbeque. This is a perfectly good time to wear that great pair of sunglasses you got last week. However, if those sunglasses are completely opaque or mirrored on the outside, reconsider for something that shows off your eyes a little.
In a social gathering or setting, people will presumably strike up conversations with others they find interesting. It can be difficult to approach a new person and say hello. When that person is wearing dark, reflecting sunglasses, they may find themselves sitting alone watching everyone else mingle. For this circumstance, consider a shade of lens that protects your eyes and still allows your features to be seen. This will help you seem more approachable and less intimidating.
There are other times that you may want to wear sunglasses and social acceptability does not get in your way. You will not, however, enjoy any of the benefits of sunglass protection, as these high intensity lights are much stronger than the UVA and UVB rays emitted by the sun. Any kind of welding equipment, tanning beds and eclipses all emit high intensity light for which your sunglasses are no match. Special protective eyewear is needed while working with welding equipment and while in tanning beds. Additionally, a pinhole camera is the preferred apparatus for viewing an eclipse.
When deciphering where and when to bring the sunglasses, a little common sense will go a long way.
Protect yourself from high intensity light with specialized eyewear designed for that particular activity.
Know when sunglasses are needed and when they are not. Taking a moment to consider a few factors will save you embarrassment and possibly injury later.

Let’s face it, at one point or another, just about everybody can benefit from a pair of eyeglasses. Some of us need vision correction at a young age, while others do just fine without eyeglasses until later in life. It is an extremely safe statement to say that at one point in your life, you will benefit from the use of eyeglasses.
You have accepted the fact that a pair of glasses will only help you, now how do you weave your way through all the available styles to choose from? Let’s break it down into easy decisions to help you out.
For starters, when are you going to where your glasses? If you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism you will probably be wearing your glasses a good portion of the time (or at least when you want to see without contact lenses). On the other hand, if you only require correction for reading, you may be looking for an entirely different style of frame.
Eye wear comes in two main families of material; metals and plastics (also referred to as zyls). Metal frames are usually a little more streamlined and subtle. Zyl frames can be manufactured into just about any color and shape you can imagine. Yes, there are other frame materials available, such as wood and hybrid composites, but in general you will be deciding between zyl and metal eyeglass frames. For the sake of decision making, we will refer to rimless and semi-rimless frames as metals since most of them are comprised of metal based temples and nose-pieces.
Plastic frames usually have a saddle type bridge that fits securely over your nose, while metal frames come with adjustable nose pads. Bridge style decision should be made based on the rest of the frame; unless you know you absolutely do not want nose pads, for example. In that case, you will want plastic frames. Wasn’t that an easy decision?
From there you will want to consider frame and lens shapes. A good rule of thumb is to match the shape of your brow with the upper portion of the frame. That will at least get you started and based on how those look, you can try on some other pairs.
This is just enough information to get you started and help you pinpoint which style of eyeglass frame will work best for you. Remember, all in all, have fun with your eyewear. You may want a sleek and refined pair of rimless frames for those serious times, and it is perfectly alright to get a little wild and crazy with some fun colorful specs when the mood strikes.

You may ask yourself the question "are cheap sunglasses really cheap quality?” when you see sunglasses for sale at very low prices. You may be surprised to learn that cheap sunglasses are not necessarily of cheap quality. Nor are expensive sunglasses necessarily of good quality. It depends on the lens and the manufacturer.
All sunglasses will help you avoid the glare of the sun, which is their primary function. In addition to helping you be able to see when the sun is at its brightest and when most people find it difficult to see, sunglasses can also protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays of the sun.
The ultra violet rays are known to cause cataracts as well as contribute to macular degeneration in older people. They have also been linked to a certain type of skin cancer that is particularly deadly and can affect the eyes - melanoma. Sunglasses can not only allow you to see in the glare of the sun but they can also protect your eyes from the effects of ultra violet rays.
It is the lens that matter with the sunglasses and not the frame. The frames can be made of metal or hard plastic and should be lightweight so that they do not weigh down on the nose, but the frames are inconsequential when it comes to protecting your eyes from the glare of the sun. When many people seek to purchase sunglasses, they look only at the frames and not the lens and do not think to see if they are polarized or not.
Polarized lenses will actually filter out the glare of the sun and also deflect the sun from the lens through a special process called polarization. Polarized sunglasses have been popular since the 1970s although the process of polarization was first discovered in the early 1800s.
Many designer sunglasses have good lenses but others do not. You can find a discount pair of sunglasses that cost next to nothing that will offer you better UV protection from the sun than an expensive pair of designer sunglasses. It is not the frames that matter but the lens.
The frames are important to whoever wears the sunglasses, though. Most people try on different types of frames to pick those that are the most flattering for the face without regard to the lens. You can usually get a cheap pair of sunglasses that offer you good protection against the sun in a frame that you will enjoy wearing.
It make sense, therefore, to get the best pair of sunglasses for your money. You should look at polarized sunglasses because they tend to keep the glare away better than ordinary sunglasses. Many polarized sunglasses are inexpensive, but they are not cheap quality.
When buying sunglasses, look for the best deal you can get for your money. You can find knock off of designer brands as well as inexpensive brands for a lot less money if you purchase them wholesale. There are many different places online that will give you a good deal on wholesale sunglasses that may be cheaply priced but are of good quality. Are cheap sunglasses really cheap quality? The answer is “no.”
