Discount Sunglasses Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays

In the cloudy winter months, it’s difficult to imagine the sun’s rays as anything but a welcomed change. But did you know the sun’s rays can also be harmful to your eyes? Ultraviolet light produced by sunlight is responsible for several vision problems, including snow-blindness, cataracts, and numerous degenerative eye conditions. The best way to protect yourself from these harmful effects is to always wear eye protection.

Ultraviolet light is light beyond the spectrum of light that is visible to the human eye, similar to x-rays or infrared light. It comes in three forms: UVA, UVB, and UVC. Earth's atmosphere filters out almost all UVC and much of the UVB light, meaning the majority of UV rays we encounter are UVA. Indeed, UVA is in part beneficial to human beings, as it is required source for vitamin-D production in the skin. However, overexposure to any or all UV rays can lead to advanced aging, skin cancer, or just good old sunburn.

When it comes to your eyes, however, UV rays are very damaging. Most eye care professionals recommend wearing sunglasses whenever you are going to see a prolonged exposure to UV rays. And, since UV rays penetrate our atmosphere even on the cloudiest days, having proper eye protection is always a must. It’s difficult to believe that light we can’t see can be damaging to our eyes, but UV rays, whether directly from the sun, or even by reflection, pose a significant risk to our vision.

The peak hours for UV ray penetration are between 10 AM and 3 PM, when the sun is at its apex. Other factors increase risk, as well. Due to their unique atmospheric qualities, higher altitudes and locations closer to the equator see higher UV levels. You should consider all these factors when you know you have to be out in the sun for an extended period.

But, since most of us don’t really have a choice regarding sun exposure – after all, most of us don’t live and work in caves – having proper eye protection is vital. When choosing sunglasses, make sure they guarantee UV protection up to 98% (or to 400nm). Glass is largely transparent to UV rays, so plastic or composite lenses tend to be a better choice. If your glasses have been coated in a UV filter material, they are even safer.

No matter what time of year, UV rays are always present. Although they tend to penetrate the atmosphere more during the warm summer months, they are also a risk during winter. Snow reflects UV rays, essentially letting them do twice the damage. Being aware of the risks of UV exposure is the first and most important step to protecting your eyes. But, with quality protective eyewear year-round, you can enjoy the warm, healthy sunshine carefree.

Cool Sunglasses - Children Want To Wear Them Too!

Children don’t worry about the designer name when it comes to sunglasses. They just want to have cool sunglasses so that they look cool when they are wearing their shades. Parents often don’t realize the importance of choosing the right sunglasses for kids and that even a baby should wear sunglasses to protect those cute little eyes. When buying cool sunglasses for your kids you should check the UV protection that the sunglasses provide.

Not many designers offer much in the way of cool sunglasses for kids, but they are starting to realize the need for kids sunglasses. The fact that children are not responsible enough to have expensive sunglasses is one reason that many designers are coming out with cheap baby sunglasses that look fashionable and cool.

Cool sunglasses for kids are modeled after the same designs that adults wear. Although there are many outlandish designs available in kids sunglasses, there are also the conservative designs so that the kids can look as if they are wearing the same designer shades as their parents. You can get oval, square, rectangle and cat-eyes designs in kids and baby sunglasses that come in a variety of different colored lenses.

The cool sunglasses for children do not have expensive metal frames. The baby sunglasses usually have plastic frames so that the price is more appealing for parents and the kids still can look as cool as they want. You can get the kids sunglasses in all the popular designs when you shop online.

Designer Sunglasses- To Polarise or Not To Polarise?

In a nutshell, light travels in the form of waves that basically vibrate in random directions and when this light is reflected off a shiny or transparent surface it is partly or fully polarised. The only exception being when the light is perpendicular to the surface, so when Edwin H. Land invented polarised lenses back in the 1930’s, he found that by using vertically polarised filters, he could block a lot of the glare producing light that was emitted horizontally to the surface.

Today, polarised lenses are made mainly from acrylic, polycarbonate or CR-39 synthetic plastics which include a polarisation filter enclosed in these lenses.

Polarised sunglasses have been designed to ‘absorb’ up to 97% of glare from flat, reflective surfaces such as snow, water and road surfaces. Our iris’ contract in bright light conditions helping to reduce the amount of light that enters our eyes but they are unable to block a certain amount of glare, so polarised sunglasses not only perform the function of fashion accessory but also of an important safety device used by the likes of drivers, sportsmen and yachtsmen. In fact, these kinds of people have been using polarised sunglasses for years but it has only become popular amongst the general public in recent years.

Polarised lenses used in sunglasses are great for reducing glare but they do have some disadvantages including difficulty in reading LCD screens such as ATM bank screens and some car dashboard monitors. It has been shown that images whose light reflects at certain angles are invisible to the eye as seen through polarised sunglasses. Also, certain topographical features may not be visible in snow, for example, which could make it quite dangerous. This is because the polarising filters in the sunglasses block some of the light rays reflecting from the surface.

On the flip side of the coin though, polarised sunglasses are great for people with long-sightedness disorders such as hypermetropia and presbyopia by helping the iris focus easier on nearer objects.

The main difference between a normal pair of sunglasses and the polarised versions are, whereas normal sunglasses decrease the actual intensity of all light entering the eye through the lenses, the polarised lenses although doing the same, would do so in a more selective manner.

Whether you’re looking for polarised sunglasses or just the normal variety, we stock an unbeatable range of authentic designer sunglasses for both adults and kids at our website The Black Rhino.

Celebrities and their Sunglasses

Author: Nick Albert

Every celebrity out there knows the real value of a pair of designer sunglasses. Whether it’s to hide the effects of a late night out on the town or an effort to blend in on the street, a pair of quality sunglasses is absolutely indispensable. We’ve seen a lot of trends come and go, but a great pair of sunglasses will always transcend the passing fads of the day.

With the summer just around the corner, we have begun our fashion trend spotting efforts for 2006. Like years passed, celebrities are on the forefront of eyewear fashion. One of my favorite pastimes is to monitor the fashion trends of my favorite celebrities. As with last season, big sunglasses are all the rage for the ladies. God bless you, Jackie O!

Carmen Electra is one of my favorite celebrities, and one of the most stylish women in entertainment. While I could do without another season of her dreadful “reality” television show, I am dying to get my hands on a pair of the Missoni shades she was recently spotted in. They are oversized and oh-so-glamorous!

Catherine Zeta-Jones may have a thing for old, outdated actors but her fashion sense is as fresh as a spring breeze. I recently saw her sporting a pair of Dolce & Gabbana glasses that were out of this world! I suspect they were the utterly amazing “4005″ model. They were black, with the D&G logo designed into the arms of the glasses. The shades are big, bold, and beautiful!

Heidi Klum, our favorite supermodel and partygirl, has incredible fashion sense. I saw a picture of her earlier this week wearing a classic pair of Aviator shades. While a number of people in the fashion industry have been lamenting the prevalence of Aviator shades, I couldn’t imagine a world without them. Heidi was wearing a pair made by Ray Ban, and they were absolutely fabulous!

Speaking of partygirls, how could I go on without mentioning Paris Hilton? I adore Paris. She may not be taken seriously as an actress or singer, but she reigns supreme over the fashion world. She was recently spotted wearing a pair of the new Oakley glasses for women. That’s right, kids. Oakley just launched a new line of shades exclusively for women, and they are the must-have item for this fashion year. Believe the Hype!

Because Bling is In: Rhinestone Sunglasses and Crystal-studded Sunglasses

Author: Bei Maniago

When it comes to fashion, fun and outrageous are often equated with bling-bling. For those not in the know, bling-bling is the term attributed to flashy jewelry used to indicate opulence and wealth. Brazen and ostentatious it may be, but there’s no arguing that bling-bling has made its mark in the world of fashion accessories. And sunglasses, of course, are no exception.

One of the more popular types of eyewear this season would be rhinestone sunglasses. Rhinestones are the most common adornment attached to virtually any material there is. So only inexpensive sunglasses gets decorated with rhinestones, right? Wrong. In fact, famous designer brands like Gucci, Valentino, and Versace have been offering their own take on rhinestone sunglasses. And they don't come cheap, either. No designer pair goes below the $100 dollar mark. In fact, the Gucci Rhinestone Signature Oversized Round Plastic sunglasses retails at around $308, while Versace 4111B sunglasses sell at $310.

And if you think that’s flamboyant enough, think again. Designer sunglasses also come studded with Swarovski crystals. Take your pick from high-end designer labels like Roberto Cavalli, Christian Dior, or Salvatore Ferragamo. Most of these sunglasses get their ultra-chic appearances from logos adorned with shiny crystals at the temple. And it seems the latest trend points toward more being better, as well as being dearer. Most of these crystal-studded sunglasses cost no less than $300.

But what about those who just can’t afford to buy designer rhinestone sunglasses and crystal-studded sunglasses? There are some online traders offering discount designer sunglasses and these are good sources of affordable eyewear. However, replica sunglasses offer the most viable and affordable option. This is because replica rhinestone sunglass designs are inspired by designer sunglasses and are of good quality. This means you can put on a pair of stylish, dazzling eyewear without having to spend more than $40. Just make sure, though, that your purchase will serve its primary function, providing 100% UV protection. Stay away from products that do not expressly have this feature. Wearing trendy and chic eyewear would do you no good if you destroy your vision in the process.

The internet is a good source of rhinestone sunglasses, either in authentic, discounted, or replica forms.
